Lesson Plan 3.4 – Tire Service

Lesson Objective – Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to list the terminology related to tires and inspect, maintain, repair, change and balance tires. Mastery of the material will be demonstrated when the student achieves a score of 70% or better on a written and/or performance based test and completes the skill sheets with 100% accuracy.

Materials needed to teach lesson
  1. PowerPoint presentation
  2. Tires mounted on wheels
  3. Tires showing defects, misalignment or environmental damage
  4. Tires with punctures
  5. Skill Sheet 3.4.1 – Tire Identification
  6. Skill Sheet 3.4.2 – Tire Remove/Replace, Balance
  7. Skill Sheet 3.4.3 – Tire Repair


Lesson 3.4 Objectives
  1. Identify tire construction and sidewall nomenclature
  2. Inspect tires and identify tires with wear patterns and defects
  3. Change tires using tire changing equipment
  4. Repair tires using inside and outside repair techniques
  5. Balance tires using electronic equipment
